What We're Playing — Red Dead Redemption 2

The most anticipated game of the past five years has finally ridden into town, and it doesn't disappoint.

The Wild Western has been a staple of the movie industry for decades and yet the same can't be said when it comes to the world of gaming. Armed with the desire to amend the travesty was Red Dead Redemption, the game that told the story of outlaw John Marston. The game was so successful that calls for a sequel plagued its creators, Rockstar, ever since. Finally, in 2018, those calls were answered with Red Dead Redemption 2.

Set in 1899, players are cast as Arthur Morgan, an unrepentant law outlaw and member of the Van Der Linde gang, which draws inspiration from the real-life Butch Cassidy 'Wild Bunch' gang. Led by the charismatic Dutch Van Der Linde who talks of a grand vision about moving west, away from the encroachment of civilisation and living as free men and women, the vision of the gang basically focuses on committing a lot of crime and, naturally, shooting people.

It's a sprawling homage to every Western and already, players are saying it's one of those games you can disappear into and find yourself playing for quite some time to come yet. Red Dead Redemption 2 is easily the most nuanced and complex game Rockstar has ever made. When it comes to the characters and stories, there is restraint and grace - something Rockstar had previously not been known for. But here, in this world, it exists in full force.
